Well girls, the time has come for me to take a temporary, but very likely permanent, hiatus from life as La Pulga Diva...due to some major life changes, I won't have regular internet access for quite a while...and I'm not sure if I'll have time to devote to keeping up this blog once I have a computer again!

I'll leave the blog published so that you can use the sidebar as a reference for all the great style blogs and sites out there...in the meantime, for you blogger fashionistas, I'll be looking forward to reading your posts as always! This has been a lot of fun - thanks for reading!

Pulga Honey surprised me this past weekend with a vintage bag (I'll post pics tommorrow) that I have been salivating over for weeks, but was too cheap to buy, and by taking me to one of the nicest restaurants in Pulgaville. My man is the BEST, I am such a lucky girl!!!

I wanted to wear something special for the occasion, and came upon a scarf my best friend brought me from her recent trip to Morocco. I wore a white tube bra, and

1. pulled the scarf longways from behind my back so that it met equally on both sides in the front;
2. rolled the top over a little, pinning it with a safety pin in the middle so that the scarf ends draped; then
3. I cinched it with a gold belt.

All these Pulgaville well-to-dos were coming up and asking where I got my top, I loved it!!!

Don't you hate it when you order shoes online, count down the days until they arrive, voraciously rip apart the box when they're finally delivered...only to find that they look nothing like their picture online?

Yeah, me too. That's why I swung over to my local Target this past weekend to scope out their new fall boots. The bad news? Overall, the range of boot quality was definitely, well, not good. The only worthy pair I found were these cutie pies:

$30 at Target - super comfy and soft, with a perfet slouch for Fall. Get a half size smaller, they run big.

The good news? I did find some other shoes, non-boots, that were surprisingly cute and not-cheap looking...shoes I had seen before online and dismissed, but actually look so so much cuter in person. For example, these:

$19 at Target - the material is soft and flattering, not hard like the pic suggests. The color is also lighter, not so garish. Perfect for the metallic silver trend this fall...

And these:
$25 at Target - real leather uppers, these are suprisingly sexy and polished in person. They remind me of the Sex and the City episode where Carrie finds the Manolo Blahnik mary janes at Vogue...

My pulga ways are not limited to clothing and accessories - I also love entertaining. Doing so with some semblance of personal style and flare is a constant challenge on a budget!

I want to try something new and share a surprisingly easy, delicious, impress-your-guests recipe that is perfect for summer bbq's - at a pulga price of course!

Ingredients *

1-2 lbs shark cut into 1 inch cubes (don't be intimidated - during the summer even Albertson's has shark, at $6-7 / lb! 1lb will feed 3-4 people with this recipe.)
1 white onion
A few cloves garlic
1 bunch cilantro
1 can chipotle peppers (find these at any "international aisle" of regular grocery stores, or a Latino grocery store, for $1.99 / can. Chiopotle is dried smoked jalapeno - canned, it's in a liquid called "adobo." If you can't find canned chipotles, get 3 dried chipotle peppers and boil them. You can buy the liquid adobo separately.)
Extra virgin olive oil
16 corn tortillas
a few limes

* ALL these items are cheapest at local Latino grocery stores! If you live in TX, CA, FL, NY, NJ, CO you have no excuse to go to Whole Foods for this stuff. Pulga Honey and I bought everything (minus the oil, garlic, and tortillas, which we already had) for less than $10.

To Make

Blend 1/2 cup oil, 1/2 onion, garlic, a small handful of cilantro, zest of 1 lime, 2 chipotle peppers, and 2 spoonfuls of adobo.
Marinate and refridgerate the shark in the blended mixture for 1 hour.
At this point, Pulga Honey fires up the grill. If you don't grill, you could also used a grill plate, or maybe even a Foreman grill. Whatever works.
Chop up the other onion half, some more cilantro, and limes (into wedges) for garnish.
Heat up the tortillas (microwave or in oiled pan, 30 seconds on each side)
Skewer marinated shark pieces. If you use wooden skewers, soak them in water while the shark is marinating so that they won't catch on fire!!!
Grill shark a few minutes on each side.
Voila! Shark tacos! Stuff tortillas with onions, cilantro, and lime juice. Pulga Honey also mashes up an avocado with salt for extra garnish. Yum.

Pulga Honey insisted on taking a pic of my outfit - we were only bumming around the house, but just because I'm at home doesn't mean I don't like wearing fun pieces, like this reconstructed tunic:

One of the reasons I love Style Diary so, outside of its veritable fountain of inspiration, is that the profiles are from all over the world. I love seeing what girls are wearing and how they put their pieces together in other places.

1. When I changed my format, I lost some code. I'm trying to give my titles their own links. I designated an address in the link space (here, for example, http://lapulgadiva.com/drop-dead/) - but it doesn't work. Can anyone tell me what code I need to use in my template to make the link work?

2. Some folks recently asked me for my "banner." I don't have one, and don't know how to make one. Does anyone know of a good online resource how-to?

3. My archives only go up to the end of June...what code do I need to use in my template to fix that?

Any help (or direction on where to find help) would be much appreciated!

Another one of my fashion obsessions is skulls. Way before that whole McQueen scarf thing, before the Pirates of the Carribean, and long before the nautical fad, I was accessorizing with skulls. I'm not goth, I'm not even punk. I don't know why, I just love 'em. Skeletons too, but mostly skulls. Maybe it's the Dia de los Muertos Mexicana in me. Whatever it is, it's here to stay.

My favorite skulls are girly skulls. Like the tunic I posted about here (I ended up buying 2 in different colors). The other day at Buffalo Exchange I found a cami with skulls subtly woven in the lace. I almost swooned, I was so excited.

So imagine my delight upon spying these objects of desire. Not remotely pulga priced, but I had to share because they are completely lovable and worthy of coveting nonetheless:

If I had a million dollars I'd buy the entire Made Her Think collection! Each piece is fun, feminine, and edgy...with a unique spiritual quality. The designer only uses precious materials, and her designs consist mostly of skulls, horseshoes, hearts, wings, shields, birds and pearls either in clusters or separately as stand-alone pieces.

Here's another attempt at channeling the pin-up look at work. Outside the office, I would pair this with a tighter pencil skirt, a wide belt, and a red clutch. I love the geometric print on this blouse, very mod. Check out Punky's sale for more great secondhand and vintage finds.

Not long ago I posted about kokopuff's stylediary. Ah, kokopuff. The woman. The myth. The legend.

Well Style Diary finally picked up on the obsession (hey, it's not just me, it's global, baby) and wrote a feature on kokopuff, detailing a "how-to" on how to pick up her look. As if such a thing were possible, heh.

Anyway, check it out, it's pretty good. I so envy her "minimalist" approach, being the clutter queen that I am...On the bright side, I didn't realize that she's only 5'1" - giving hope to shorties like me everywhere!

This weekend I stumbled upon my local Buffalo Exchange. One question remains: how did I not discover this place sooner?

Buffalo Exchange is a nationwide chain (find your location here) where clothing and accessories are bought, sold and traded directly with store customers. You can bring in your former goodies for trade or cash on the spot.

The place is full of designer wear, vintage, jeans, leather, basics, and irresistible one-of-a-kind items. And because of the store's "recycling" approach, there is constantly new inventory.

I found a pair of Marc Jacobs jeans half-off for $20, and a vintage pair of ruby red Bruno Magli slingbacks for $14. I promised myself no more red heels, but how could I resist?

I was so jealous when I read about Fitzgerald's summer tea party, and even more jealous when I saw pics of the event, which included girlie white tents and floppy hats. Why have I never been invited to a tea party, I pouted. Alice be d*mned, I want a tea party!

I was super-psyched to find the black romper (above) yesterday at a local thrift store! I am especially enamored of the little details, like the plunging neckline, the front AND back pockets, and button down front. I'm so happy!!!

I thought a good jumpsuit was going to be the hardest piece to find, since generally, they aren't always flattering, even on the most rockin' bods. Exhibit A:

I was looking for a good fit in the waist, rear-end, and bust, and nothing to flashy, since theoretically, jumpsuits are supposed to be a statement in themselves. Here's another option I was considering. I thought this one was pretty cute, too.

Love this long tunic by Shelli Segal. I spotted it a month ago while window shopping, but I notice Stylish Mind featured it in a recent post on camis. Why did I want it? (1) It's jersey, i.e. comfortable and soft, (2) it's double layered with built-in support which means no cumbersome bra in the summertime, and (3) the gathered front is just the kind of understated detail that grabs my attention when I'm rummage shopping.

But the length and bubble hem are just not conducive for a busty gal like me. And of course, the cost was enough to freeze my pulga heart. So this is what I came up with instead:

Okay, I know I'm putting myself at risk for tar and feathering, but I have to say it:

What is so great about the style in the Devil Wears Prada?

I'm sure the movie is good and I'm looking forward to seeing it. But all the hype about the fashion in the movie seems way unwarranted from what I've seen so far. Amazon.com even has a Devil Wears Prada Boutique where you can buy a knockoff of Andrea's purse, which, by the way, is not so cute. And if I have to look at that picture of Andrea in the green dress with the vintage belt one more time...ugh.

I guess this only confirms that when it comes to clothes, it takes more than a label to set my heart racing. I think I'll use the long weekend to rent some flicks featuring heroines with style that is actually worth coveting. My favorites include:

By night, I adore tight pencil skirts, high heels, big belts, and bright colors. By day, my look is downright bohemian...long before Sienna ever hit the scene. Between my two alter-egos, you can imagine how difficult it was to transition to conservative office wear and the dreaded "business casual."

I mean, really, how do they expect me to work with tailored suits, 1" pumps, and button-down shirts? Me, who's outfit for the Beck concert last night consisted of a vintage T, corset belt, gypsy skirt, and dangerously tall teetering wedges? Ugh.

As a result, I'm constantly scouting ideas to help me fit in around the office, without being bored into oblivion...and while remaining loyal to my pulga diva (read: cheap, bargain-obsessed) ways.

I recently stumbled onto shopaholic's page on Style Diary. Her lessons? I was perusing Urban Outfitters with Pulga Honey's mom yesterday, when this dress simulatneously caught our eye. "I love it!" I exclaimed adoringly. "That is so you," she cooed approvingly. We made a beeline to the price tag...only to read $100 in dismay!

My pin-up obsession is no secret. But I have to dress pretty conservatively for work, and have been searching for ways to "dress down" the va-va voom factor of the pin-up look. At a pulga price, of course!

I started with this sheer polka-dot top with a tie at the neck. I snagged it off Punky Style - outside the office I plan to wear it with black bermuda shorts and white peep-toes like Ms. McAdams (right):

When I was younger, me and my girlfriends would always get ready to go out at eachother's houses. We'd primp, parade outfits, labor over what makeup and jewelry to wear. Man, those were the days. I miss last week.

Anyway, there was always that one girl who had all the neat shiznit that everyone else wanted to borrow. Well, guess what. She has a blog now.

Yes! I love the wave of blogger fashionistas selling their rags online for a fraction of what they paid. My favorite is Shop My Closet. Seriously, I check her site multiple times a day, ever since I just barely missed the lovely vintage peep-toes pictured above. I still can't believe she's my size. What are the odds? It's actually my duty to stalk that blog - the cosmic coincidence is just too much to ignore.

As I have mentioned, I am obsessed with StyleDiary. It's just the coolest concept. EVER.

One of my favorite style diaries is kokopuff. Her style is versatile, elegant, original...and threaded through with awesome thrift store finds. Sigh. My hero.

I love the look of this top she has by Ann Demeulemeester.

Unfortunatly, Pulgaville is not nearly as fashion-forward as NYC. If I were to wear this lovely piece, I'm sure I would get more than a few comments about "straight jackets" and "marshmellow puffs" from the clueless heathens all about me.

Inspired and undaunted, I've been searching for a similar silhouette - billowing but shaped - in something more understated for summer in Pulgaville. I found the solution below at Nordstrom's half-yearly sale. And Pulga-priced to boot. Happy day!

I have a collection of vintage designer shoes. These are Bruno Magli, and even though the colors look blah in the pics, I could immediately see their potential even though they were a half size too small (I have to get 7 1/2 or larger in vintage - they had some small feet back in the day). I love Style Diary. LOVE it.

SD is essentially a huge database where members from ALL OVER the world can post pictures of their outfits. I go here for inspiration, especially when I'm too broke to shop. It's a great way to find ideas to reinvigorate old pieces.

For example, I have a belt just like the one above (but camel), and usually wear it wrapped around jackets and tailored button-downs for work during the fall and winter. I never thought about pairing it with a tee for casual wear...now I can pull it out of my closet and get more mileage out of it for summer.

Oh man, your Pulga Diva has had some very successful thrift encounters lately.

First, I sort of went crazy at Goodwill and various thrift stores in Pulgaville last weekend. If my digital camera wasn't lost in storage somewhere, I'd post pics. In the meantime, included in my record haul were:

I've been noticing plenty of bold floral patterns out and about - in fact, InStyle features some strong florals like the Roxy skirt above here.

As a ferocious bargain huntress, I adore garage sales, thrift shops, and of course, Goodwill. I'm cozy with all the Goodwills in Pulgaville - I know all the salesfolks and they know me. It's glorious.

So, Pulga Honey took me out salsa dancing last Saturday. The spot we were going to was a hole in the wall, which can only mean two things: (1) fabulous music and (2) plenty of smoke (not so fabulous).
